Winter Warmth – Mulled Wine

There are a million and one ways to make Mulled Wine! The key ‘pattern’, if you will, really is:

  • Wine: You can use white, however red is the most common
  • Citrus: Oranges are a classic, and once you have your citrus you can go and add other fruits if you like
  • Spices: Cinnamon seems to be in almost every mulled wine, but other spices vary and change
  • Sweetener: Some people just use sugar, or add something different to add taste
  • Optionally, Extra Alcohol: Some people add Bourbon, Brandy, Cognac, Rum or something alone those flavour lines, and others add liqueurs to add sweetness

What You’ll Need:

Glass: Wine Glass or Stemless Wine Glass

Ingredients:

  • Red Wine
  • Oranges
  • Star Anise
  • Cloves
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Vanillin Sugar
  • Vanilla Bean
  • (Optional) Brandy

Garnish: Orange Slice

Making the Drink:

This is my version of the drink that only takes 30 minutes, but you could also do this in a slow cooker!

  • Slice 2 Oranges
  • Put a pot on the stove over a low heat
  • Add 1 bottle of Red Wine to the pot
  • Add 4 Star Anise
  • Add 10 Cloves
  • Add 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • Add 1 Vanilla Bean
  • Add Vanillin Sugar (to taste)
  • Add the Orange Slices
  • (Optional) Add 60ml of Dark Rum
  • Simmer on a low heat, making sure not to let it bubble
  • Cover for 20 minutes
  • Turn stove off a let it sit for a minute
  • Serve and enjoy

Feeling Fancy?

To create something really cool from leftover Mulled Wine, let it cool and sit overnight, then add around 1/2 cup of sugar, and put on a high heat. After a while of mixing to avoid burning, the mixture will thicken slightly. Let it cool off, and you now have an incredibly low alcohol, Mulled Wine Syrup! Delicious on orange desserts!
