Winter Warmth – Mulled Cider

There are a million and one ways to make Mulled Cider! The key ‘pattern’, if you will, really is:

  • Cider: You can use almost any type but apple is standard
  • Citrus: Oranges are a classic
  • Fruit: Apples are added to a Mulled Cider quite often, but you could experiment with pears or plums or something else.
  • Spices: Cinnamon seems to be in almost every mulled drink, but other spices vary and change
  • Sweetener: Some people just use sugar, or add something different to add taste
  • Optionally, Extra Alcohol: Some people add Dark Rum or Spiced Rum, or even Whisky, and others add liqueurs to add sweetness

What You’ll Need:

Glass: Irish Coffee Mug or Rocks Glass

Ingredients:

  • Apple Cider
  • Oranges
  • Apple
  • Cloves
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Cardamom Pods
  • Allspice Berries
  • Brown Sugar
  • (Optional) Dark Rum

Garnish: Orange Slice

Making the Drink:

This is my version of the drink that only takes 30 minutes, but you could also do this in a slow cooker!

  • Slice 2 Oranges
  • Slice 1 Apple
  • Put a pot on the stove over a low heat
  • Add desired amount of Cider (usually 2 bottles) to the pot
  • Add 4 Cloves
  • Add 2 Bruised Cardamom Pods
  • Add 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • Add 15 Allspice Berries or 1-2 teaspoons of Allspice Powder
  • Add the Orange and Apple Slices
  • Add 40grams / 2 heaped barspoons of Brown Sugar
  • (Optional) Add 60ml Dark Rum
  • Simmer on a low heat, making sure not to let it bubble
  • Cover for 20 minutes
  • Turn stove off a let it sit for a minute
  • Serve and enjoy

Feeling Fancy?

As I mentioned earlier, you can do Mulled Cider or any mulled drink in a slow cooker! Try letting it sit for even more intense and delicious flavours to brew out of the cider and the spices!
